Emanuel van Praag is an expert in financial law. He advises financial institutions on how they can carry on their trade and keep all their stakeholders happy (the Dutch National Bank, the Authority for the Financial Markets, the ECB and the customers). He also prepares the necessary documentation for this (such as permit applications, policy documents and customer contracts) and assists in the communication with the supervisory authorities.
Besides his role as counsel at Kennedy Van der Laan, Van Praag is a professor of Financial Technology and Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he conducts research into big data, open banking (FIDA) and the payments industry (PSD2). Furthermore, MiFID I and II and AMLD V (crypto assets) are among his specific areas of expertise. He also has special expertise in the field of cross-border financial services.
Emanuel not only has academic knowledge, but also inside knowledge of the financial industry. He worked as an in-house lawyer with several financial institutions for four years. His advice and solutions are therefore extremely practical and take into account the consequences for the entire organization.
Van Praag is the author of the books ‘Europees financieel toezicht: Bevoegdheden in het Europees financieel toezicht’ (European Financial Supervision: Powers in European financial supervision) and ‘PSD2: naar open banking en bankieren in een ecosysteem’ (PSD2: Towards Open Banking and Banking within an Ecosystem). Van Praag is editor of Tijdschrift voor Financieel Recht (Financial Law Journal) and a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group for the European Financial Data Space.
