Evidence is mounting that social media, in its current design, has adverse effects on youth, adults, and society as a whole. Not only do these platforms incorporate manipulative design features, but even social media executives acknowledge these practices. Although regulatory tools like EU data protection law and the Digital Services Act (DSA) offer means to depart from existing practices, critical questions remain: What are the hurdles to effective action, and why is progress slow despite available resources? This webinar will explore the evidence of social media impact, the barriers to enforcing meaningful change in social media practices and discuss actionable steps for a healthier digital landscape.
